what makes a good image

by matt

I took this on a grim and rainy night in Leeds back in 2019. I recall Light Night being a pretty cool thing with loads of bustling crowds, street food, processions of people dressed up in glowing, pulsating and illuminated outfits. I also recall that when I looked at the scans of the photos I took from that night, I felt really bummed that they weren’t in focus. Back in those days, that obviously mattered to me because I never posted any of the images I took. However, when I look at the images now, the same pictures transport me right back there and I’m kind of aghast that I didn’t deem them ‘worthy’ enough to publish at the time. Now, I see them as real ‘shot in the moment’ pictures which I really, really like. Funny how your perception of what makes a ‘good’ image can change over a period of time. I love this image (now). I printed it in the darkroom at the weekend.
